Whimsical is the first word that comes to mind when describing Karen Pasqualucci's art work. She is a Sarnia artist who is, for the first time, joining the Sarnia Artist's Studio Tour.
Karen brings the vivid colours of her native South Africa to her art.
Her enthusiasm for life is reflected in her eclectic mix of photography, acrylic paints and collage. Most recently she has been absorbed by the lushness of glass bead mosaics. She is painting with beads!
She started her artistic career as a photographer for an insurance agency, moved up to computer aided illustrator. Then for many years she simply doodled on everything that stayed still long enough. In 2001 she took to using her home as her canvas and bewildered her family with orange and yellow walls, wooden sculptures and unique rug hooked mats in a somewhat primitive style. In 2008 she returned to photography and spent hours happily morphing her children into mermaids and fairies on the computer. Karen partnered with Joanne Webb who is well known for her fabulous photographic portraits. Using those she added digital layers to make unique, personalised artwork for each client.
Her latest art project has been to create a large ceiling tile above each child's bed for the children's ward in the new Bluewater Health building. Enormous care was taken to hide images in the works that could enthrall a child with hours to look and imagine.
She recently returned from 3 weeks in South Africa where she was again inspired by the native work in wire. Especially fascinating are the pieces that are made from just 1 long piece of wire. Naturally she adds her own twist - she crochets the wire into mermaids and dragons, all lusciously decorated with beads. Art you need to touch.
“I have found art to be a great way for my children (and myself) to explore our world. I have been fascinated by the growth of understanding in my children as they express themselves in their art.” Karen says. She and her husband Renato, homeschool their three children. “The vibrant community of artists in Sarnia have welcomed my children and generously mentored them. We are very grateful to them all and particularly to Ron Broda and Ariel Lyons.”
Karen's art will be on display at Art in the Park, the Lawton Gallery in June, and again September, Art at the Lake and on the Studio Tour.
